Letter, Matthew Zwerling to Israel and Florence Zwerling; August 11, 1964
Marks, August 11, 1964
Really something else. We are in Marks one day. Town population 2500. [Had been incident last week, whites surrounding cars.] We just had a mass meeting at a small masonic hall, all 100 seats filled. 100 more standing who couldn't get in. 50 or more kids who will help us canvass, we hope. Looks like a really good project.
I'm also working some in Tunica - the people there are ready to move - we've arranged a meeting where they can ask SNCC for a couple of permanent workers. We haven't done anything overt there [all secret] - probably we won't yet, we'll wait until after we leave and some permanent staff moves in.
The FDP convention in Jackson was terrific.
We have almost 3,000 Freedom registered - 50,000 statewide.
As the summer is drawing to a close everything is beginning to pick up speed. I hope it doesn't all fall back September 1.
As of now, Lew and I plan to leave Sunday, August 30 - be home September 1 at the latest.
Love and Freedom,
