Sunday July 5, 1964 1 P. M.
Dear Children:
The object of this letter is simply to give me the feeling that I am keeping in touch with you. To date we have received only the letter you wrote to us from Kentucky, but we are hopefully awaiting the end of this holiday so that mail will be flowing again and we will hear from you once more. All we want to know is that you are well and sage.
Radio reports are now most sketchy- which we interpret as an indication that quiet reigns in Miss.
We also know that 3 Congressman have " invaded" Miss., much to the distress of Gov. Johnson, who has advised Mississippian to keep calm during the presence of the visitors. Also, Luther Hodges is making a tour this week of the southern states to consult with the governors. We are praying that the visiting dignitaries will continue going into Miss., as one means of maintaining order.
We received a mimeographed letter from Bob Moses a few days ago addressed to " Parents of all Miss. Volunteers," asking us to take immediate action for the safety of the volunteers; i. e. write Pres. J and R. Kennedy to station federal marshals throughout the state, etc., etc; also to Pres J to agree to give COFO an interview.
Of course we have been busy writing and wiring, and have asked others to do the same.
One day last week Dad received a phone call from Allan Schazin asking for your address. Dad didn't know anything about an address and told Allan he would hear from us by mail. I sent him the 507 White St. address and assume he wrote to you there.
Of course, I am also assuming you are getting my mail at 507 White St., or at least it is being forward to you, wherever you are.
Please watch yourselves, and if there is anything else we can do let us know.
Radio and newspaper reports are thinning out- which we take to mean there is not danger at the moment- and we are praying it will stay this way.
