Billboards and placards on the buildings are political advertisements for local elections on November 8 (mayor, district attorney). The bristles of the witch's broom have a billboard space labeled "This spot still available." [Date analysis: Manuscript entry in the cartoon's lower margin is "Thursday, Oct 30" for date of original publication. Years 1969, 1975, and 1980 during Pletcher's time at New Orleans Times-Picayune have October 30 = Thursday.
