P.S. I know that all the stuff I've sent is just more to add to your already big amount of Europe preparation, school exams, but I'd like you to know about as much of it as you can-Please ask any questions, and I'll try to help you understand why I'm going on and along with it-okay?
P.P.S. Chaplain Reckard has offered to write to you if you'd like-He isn't expecting great danger for the summer, and it's interesting to know why….
May 23, 1964
Dear Family,
Here are some things I've been planning to send for a long time, and there are many more information sheets which I'd planned to include here, but which I've loaned to Heidi, because she's gone home to show them to her parents this weekend. She had planned to go summer school, but last Wednesday night she went to Caltech to hear Chaplain Reckard (of the colleges here, who just returned from Hattiesburg-one of the men who interview me) [1]. He was speaking to the Caltech applicants to Miss. Project and to other interested Caltechers (e.g. my friend Tom Latham is working in Pasadena this summer full time on smog reduction and full time on civil rights work and sending money to help with living expenses and bail for his friends in Mississippi Project) Anyway, after Heidi came back from this meeting she told me that she had chosen to do this for the summer (!) This was sort of a surprise because of course I've talked about it for so long, but apparently she got a new understanding of the immediacy and the depth of the problem and the kind and extent of positive effort that is going into this one summer (thus, as she says, she can do the other things "any other summer."
