My love,
Yesterday we threw a thousand shells into Jackson, and were replied to furiously. They burst and flew about and by my quarters in desperate style - We are all entrenched - My quarters consist of a ditch cut fifty to 80 yds behind the center of my brigade. The shells chiefly pass over the troops, and reach my position.
I received a fine bouquet yesterday after the cannonading from one of my Colonels, a flower from which I send my love in this letter.
I was informed last night that one of my officers had discovered in an abandoned house papers and belongings to the Arch Rebel Davis and in hopes of getting some valuable maps. I intend moving out this morning.
