Essex Co, VA January 30th 1863 Dear Aunt Car,
I recieved your kind letter of the 13th and was glad to hear from you. I thought you had forgotten me. I had wrote to you severral times & I hav never got answer from you til the other day. I hav not a word of news to write to you. We have verry hard times hear. The snow & mud is about shoe deep. This is was than any infantry camp I ever saw. The horses tramples the mud up all over camp. Aunt Car I wish I could see you once more. I could tell you a great many things that has happined since I sas you. I hant got much time to write. I am on gard today. Tell Gus I lng to get a ferlough & come home before next Christmas. I think it is a bad chance to get my old man's ferlough. Now tell Gusta to write me word how long George Hawkins ferlough is. I recon he has got a verry long one from what I can hear.
