Chesterfield County, VA June the 21 .64 My Dear Caroline,
I seat myself this morning to write you a few lines to let you here from me once more. I have bin verry unwell for some time. I cant get anything to eat that suits my appetite. You know I never could get anything hardly when I wat at home that I could eat at this season of year. I got me one mess of scraps a few days ago. I got one chicken & had pay ten dollars for it. Was something over half grown. The new issue does not get any more than the old did before the discount was taken off. Caroline I have bin on picket some of three or four days since I have bin with my Company. The other day we was relieved at night. When we got up to start back, the Yankees commenced firing on us. Then we had to get out of way as we could. The balls flew thick around us but we hard to charge to Yankees out of their rifle pitts. That is hard to do. I had rather something ece (else). Caroline, they are fighting over Petersburg. Today will deside the thing whether the Yankees will get Petersburg or not. They faught there last Friday & Saturday. They lost was heavey on bothe sides so they say. I expect it would. I must close soon. You must write to me. Farewell for this time.
You G.W. Belcher
