June the 8 Battlefield Ten miles Northeast of Richmond My Dear Caroline,
I seat myself this morning to write you a few lines to let you k now that I am yet a breathing the sweet breath of life. We have bin in line of battle for the last two or three weeks. Some may thing that is verry easy duty to do but I can tell you a verry different story from that. I had rather rowll (roll) logs the same length of time. It is reported that Grant's army is makeing for the South side of the James River. When they get possession of Virginia, the Virginia troops will have great encoragement to follow them on into North Carolina. If they have got as mutch force allong the line at other plases as they have here, they will come verry near getting Richmond this campeign. I cant
