May the 2 1864 Camp White Oak Swamp, Fifteen miles east of Richmond My Dear Caroline,
I seat myself this eavening to answer you kind & wellcome letter which has just come to hand. I am well today & have bin since I saw you. We will leave here today I reckon. I do not nowe where we will gowe yet, though I expect we go Lee. They will not let the men know where they are going if they can help it. We do not nowe whether the Brigade has got orders or not. They are going to get our Brigade together. Then I shel expect to start at any time. Lee wants us. The banance (balance) of the Brigade is near Richmond. You said that you wanted me to answer you letter. I am in the gard house at this time. I have no ink here to write with. You must write to me whenever you get the chance. I must close soon. I rote day before yester concerning my punishment.
