March the 25 1864 Near Richmond, VA My Dear Caroline,
I seat myself this eavening to answer you kind and welcome letter which come to me today. Mr. B.E. Martin fetched it to me this morning. I was verry glad to here from you & to here that you was loocking so well. I am well at this time & have bin since I saw you. I have no news to write of interest. Old Geff Davis has put off shooting them that was condemed to be shot today. There was fifteen men in our Brigade that was sentenced to be shot today but it has turned out precisely as I told them it would. I do not consider myself any prophit but if I had have own the Confedercy I would betted all of it that the men that was condemned would not be sohoot (shot).
