Camp near Kinston, NC December the 26 1863 Dear Mary,
I commence this on the rong side. I seat myself this morning to write you a few lines to inform you that I am well as to health but my ancle is not well. I am afread it will be sometime before it will get well. It is worse at this time than it was when my Regment left me. I have no news to communicate of interest. The weather is verry cold here. I judge it is verry cold where you are. I suffred with cold last night. All time I was in my bed but I did not lay there long. I got up & ________ I my house is somewhat open. I have got(?) two blankets. I have to spred down one of them on the pine leaves to keep them from sticking in me & then I have to cover myself with the other. I have spent a verry lonesome Christmast. I have not bin three hundred yards since my Regment left me. They left here last Sunday. They had some fun yesterday over some gees. They called it
