My Dear Wife,
I seat myself this morning to write you a few lines to inform you of my preasent condition. I am under arrest & confied in Castle Thunder prison. I was arreined before a Jeneral Court Martial in this city & tryed for comeing home and when my sentence red out it was to kept me un gard in camp but General Barton ordered us to this prison. It was two trouble to gard us with the Brigade. My time will be out Sunday week if they do not release me before. Barton's Brigade was I the fight yester. Capt. Tailor was killed. Of my Regment, he was the only one that I herd of. Coln. Cabbell of Thirty Eight was mortally wounded. General Barton's horse was shot from under him. Barton's Brigade lost one hundred & fifty killed, wounded so ses the papers. There is a great many rumors afloat here. I must close for this time. I will write to you as soon as I get to my command. They are expecting the next fight to nea Peatersburg as they enemy is near that place. Gener Buregard is there with a portion of his troops.
