My Dear Mary,
I take the pleasureful opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am well at preasen except a hirting in my back that I never expect to get over. It grows on me constantly. You need not be uneasy about that. I will do duty as long as I am able and then they will be satisfied if they could get the men to do without eating. You may be satisfied that this ware [war] will not last long. One quarter of a pound of pork is our ration of meat. It will get down [to] two ounses in the course of two months. That will bring the ware to a close as soon as anything else. You sed something about the money. You can keep the money or you can pay it out. I think it will be the best thing to pay
