My Dear Mary,
I take my pen in hand to drop you a few lines to let you know that I am yet standing the storm but I have bin looking for someone to bring my substitute evry day. I would like verry well to get out of the slaughter pen. I could tell you a great eal about this army if I could see you. There has bin several days of late that could have put my substitute put in if I could have gotten here. That is the great difficulty that I have to contend with. There is hardly anyone that knows how to get to the army. If they cant
