October the 25 1863 Camp near Kingston, NC My Dear Mary,
I take the pleasureful opportunity of writing to you a few lines to inform you that I am well & truly whoping when those few lines come to hand you may be enjoying the same. I have no news to write that will interest you. There has bin two hard faught battles in northern Virginia, so report ses. I expect that our men got the worst of it. If they had not it would have filled the car whit hwo saws. They no how to keep all the whippings that our men gets to thereselves as mutch as possible. I have bin on picet one time
