My Dear Caroline,
I take the pleasure of writing to you a few lines to inform you that I am well at this [time]. Whoping when these few lines comes to hand you may be enjoying the same. I have no news to write worthy of your attention. We are under marching orders. Some thinks we are going to fredericksburg - some to weldon, north carolina. The yankees are advansing on weldon with a large force of cavaldry and some infantry. We will have a hard fight some[where] about richmond some time soon. I think our little Confederacy is getting in a critical condition. They have taken vicksburg and can take Charleston South Carolina any day that they may set to do so. It is thought we will be under the french government before Christmas. I don't nowe whether that will be sowe or not.
