September the 1 1863 Camp near Rapadan River My Dear Mary,
I recieved you kind letter & was very glad to here from you. I was looking for it when it came. It makes me fell like a new man to read you letters until you begin to talk about my wanting you to die & get out of my way. I then feel so bad. Caroline we have all got to dye at some future time & I wish I was prepared to pay the dept. I think I will try to lead a better life. If I was at home with you and George, I would be a happy man to what I am. You must all do the best you can for yourself. If I get sick I want you to come to my assistance. I will write
