Transcript	May the 25 1863 My Dear Mary, I seat myself this morning to answer you kind letter of the 3 of this month. It was mailed the nineteenth of this mont at Carter's Store. That is the way the post masters does their buisness. I shel dyrect you letters to Richmond, VA. Dyrect you letters to the care of Capt. G.B. Griggs Fifty Seventh VA Volunteers. Say this: 57 VA Volunteers. The best pland is for to dyrect all you letters to Richmond & then they will send them to the Regment. It is hardly worthwhile for me to say I am well for I am not. I have a verry bad cold and herting in my back, hips. You need not be uneasy about me. I will live as long as I can, that is a shure case. The Yanks are fighting at Vicksburg. They lost ten thousand men so the papers states we may have lost more than that, so far as I know. If I do not get better in short time I will have to rest a little while. If I am sent to the hospital, I will come home as soon as possible. If I am able to come, you must not say anything about this. If I am sent to the hospital, will get to Danville if I can. Then I wanted you to come after me. I will get a transfer to Danville if I cant furlough from the first hospital I sent to. You must write to me & do not say anything about this in your letters. You must excuse bad spelling, writing.
