May the 4 1862 Fort Dillard NC Gaites County My Dear Caroline, I take my pen in hand to drop you a few lines to let you know that I am yet liveing & hoping when those few lines comes to hand that you & George may be well. We have bin down to Sandy Crops, about 35 miles from here. We was ordered back here in four days. After we got thare, we had a long & tiresom march there & back. I was not well when I started. We went to Gaitsville the first day& stayed all night there & the next day we went to Sandy Crops. We did make any preperations to shelter there & ground was our bed & the skye our shelter so
