My Dear Wife,
I take my pen in hand to drop you a few lines to let you know that I am well. Hoping when those few lines reaches you all enjoying the same blessing. Our Regment is in camp one mile and half from South Quay. Our tents is all up at Suffolk. I expect Yankeys will take that place in a few days. I am hopse that they will not take us but what could our Regment do with ten or twelve thousand men if they ware come against us. President Davis ses our forces are two mutch scattered. We aught to keep more men together than we do. If we do not, we will get whiped everytime. It is thought that our Regment will have to gowe (go) to New York because they will all be taken prisoners. The Yankeys are in five or six miles of us. We are in one mile and a half of the river whey they can pass up with thare (their) gun boats. If they come here they will hear it thunder without clouds. We have got artilry on that river and they are waiting for the Yankeys to come in sight before they commence firing on them. I understand that Finey has got a discharge & gone home. Hicks is at home on ferlough. John W. Gravely is in the hospital. Was is well and the only commision officer in Company that will stay with us. You must write
