Suffolk, VA February the 2 1982
My Dear Mary,
I think of what you told me about volunteering but I see what I told you has come to
pass, that was about the malitia being draugfted (drafted). They are all called out down
here in the county of Suffolk & a great many of them has pined for during the ware (war). I am in hopes will become more reckonciled about my volenteering. If they are not
draughfted in the county of Henry yet, they will be soon. Saw the malitia of this county
this morning in the courthouse lot. They had the gard round the lot to keep them inside.
I understand that Jeneral Winder has bin arrested on suspision of being a trator. If he has,
he will be tried. If found gity (guilty), he will be hung I am in hopse. I am now about
seventy eight miles from Richmond. There are two railroads that runs threw this little
village and Nancemond River. The citizens of this city are verry mutch all armed and
some has lef here and gonn out in contry. The Fifty-Seventh Regment left here last
Thirsday evening
