Here's the letter I began writing to you immediately following the Stanford Conference…
April 26, 1964
Dear Dad and Mother, Bill, Al, Mike,
I've arrived safely now at the L.A. airport and have an hour to wait before a bus goes to the Claremont area. I had planned to write to you during the flight from S.F., but the stewardess couldn't find any paper until the end of the trip.
Thank you so much for coming through to help in my ridiculous emergency-plight. I had definitely planned to make this trip in a completely self-sufficient and un-bothersome way, and it would have been fine had I had one more dollar last night, which could've paid my bus fare ($3.00) from S.F. to Monterrey, where I was to meet the Caltech delegates who would drive me back to school. In case you were wondering why I chose to fly rather than take the train or bus - Because it's less expensive (economy flight is $12.00). The $15 you sent went for that and for my $2.60 bus ticket to Claremont from here. (My own $2.00 for bus from downtown to S.F. airport) Anyway, probably you didn't want all these details, but I wanted to tell you because I felt badly about having to bother you with the whole deal this morning. Thank you very much, and thank you for your suggestions about arranging my charge account to serve better in such cases; I'll look into that.
