the
economic
shut
out
of
poor
African
Americans
that
occurred
during
the
1960s
due
to
greater
plantation
mechanization
. The
report
includes
transcribed
meetings
and
press
conferences
with
poor
Mississippians
who
want
to
attract
the
attention
of the
federal
government
with
political
organizing
and
civil
disobedience
. The
report
preserves
the
text
from a
telegram
the
group
sent
to
President
Johnson
and the
White
House's
reply
. The
accounts
of
impoverished
citizens
criticize
Mississippi
welfare
programs
and
describe
an
act
of
civil
disobedience
in
which
a
group
of
African
Americans
occupied
empty
barracks
on a
Greenville
military
base
and were
thrown
out
by
troops
. The
document
also
includes
excerpts
from
voter
education
and
political
education
handbooks
created
to
increase
citizen
awareness
of
avenues
for
political
action
.
