Dear Sallie,
I wrote you a hasty note from Decatur on the 27th but have had no chance to send it off. So I write again and enclose the note in this.
Decatur did not surrender as I thought, but was strongly reinforced. We could have taken the place, but it was not of sufficient importance to justify the loss of life, consequent upon an assault, so we withdrew on the evening of the 28th and moved rapidly to this place. We will probably rest here tomorrow when we will cross the Tennessee River. A portion of our army is already over. We have thus far completely out-generaled Sherman, and now I think it is merely a foot-race from here to the Cumberland River. I think we can beat Sherman
