Camp near Hamburg South Carolina
March 9th, 1865
My Dear, dear, Sallie,
As this will perhaps be my last chance to get a letter through to you, I have concluded to write to you.
We arrived at Augusta yesterday and crossed the river, went through Hamburg and are now camped near the Edgefield Road. It rains almost incessantly, and I have yet to go 250 miles through the country to Charlotte, North Carolina.
I wrote you that I found our wagon train at Macon, Georgia. After Tom and Henry were ordered back to Columbus, I took our headquarters ambulance and in company with Colonel Weir of the Fifth Mississippi, left the wagon train and pushed forward. So you see, I have traversed the state of Georgia and will have to cross South Carolina and go into the [illegible] North Carolina.
