My Dear Sallie,
This dull gloomy rainy day while the General and staff have gone to church thus leaving me alone, I have concluded to spend a portion of my time writing to you. This has been [illegible] train of thought which [illegible] been [illegible] about my [illegible] home. I feel sad and [illegible] 'tis a gloomy day. Dark towering clouds overhanging, charged with mist and cold drizzling rain, hence I am confined to my tent. Now being alone, I naturally turn with a longing heart to those who are the idol of my heart, my dear wife and darling babies. Whence my mind goes back four years, and I travel along the railroad here in fine
