[Illegible] Smith's Brigade
Cedar Town, 8 a.m., October 8th, 1864
My Dear Sallie,
I write you a few lines tonight as I will have an opportunity of sending the letter off. I can't give you any particulars of our movements as the man who carries this may be captured. Suffice it to say that we have executed a great flank movement against Sherman which thus far has been a complete success, but I don't know how it will end. I think we will have one of the hardest-fought battles of the war, but where at I am unable to divine. We are within twenty miles of Rome. Where we are going, I don't know. We are marching every day fifteen or sixteen miles. The weather is very cold now, heretofore it has been raining all the time.
My health is good. General Smith lost all his bedclothes yesterday and last night. We had to wrap up in my coverlet, hence I slept cold. I am uneasy about Tom. More hard fighting in Virginia. Let me know if you have heard from him.
I write in great haste. We may move tonight. My love to all.
Kiss my dear children for me.
Yours affectionately,
W. H. Hardy
I write to Flowers Place, thinking you are there. Do write to me. I haven't heard from you since I left.
