My Dear Sallie,
I wrote you a hasty scrawl yesterday and sent it off without dating it. I now commence to give you a more lengthy letter, but don't know what minute we will be ordered off, though we are halted to cook three days' rations. You will perceive from the heading of this letter that we are in the State of Maryland, having crossed the Potomac yesterday near the "Point of Rocks" above Leesburg.
To give you a sketch of this campaign, I will commence by saying that on the 16th of August, we left
