Corinth, Mississippi
March 2nd, 1862
Dear Sallie,
We arrived here safe last night and will leave at twelve o'clock today (now in an hour) for Chattanooga. All is excitement. There are now about nine thousand troops here.
There was small battle fought on the Tennessee River about fifteen miles from here last night. The Yankees in boats landed a small force and we drove them back to their boats, killing fifteen. You see, the enemy are close by, but give yourself no uneasiness about me. If I get to Chattanooga, I will be safe. General Bragg came up with us, and we took command with Beauregard at Columbus. A hard battle is expected here soon. I didn't see your Pa and therefore sent the money back. The troops of Johnson's command are still retreating and will not probably make a stand the other side of the Tennessee
