Camp near Centreville, Virginia
Saturday, December 14th, 1861
My Dear Sallie,
The news that my leave of absence to go home was refused will be indeed sad news to you. But I told you all along to be prepared to receive it. I made the application today, and it was approved by the colonel, brigadier general, and major general, but disapproved by General Johnson, Commander in Chief of the Army of the Potomac. I have, however, applied direct to President Davis, and if that fails, then I will have to wait till we get into winter quarters, which I hope will be soon.
Oh, my dear, I would give anything to be with you, and you must be patient. I will come after a while. And you say perhaps you'll have a young captain to present me when I come. Oh me, wouldn't that be a grand and happy present, but take care that you are not disappointed in that too, as I often told you I believe you would be. Perhaps it will be the prototype of its mother - aye, a second Sallie.
