Knoxville, Tennessee
July 28th, 1861
My Dear Sallie,
We left Corinth about one o'clock on the 26th and have arrived here safe. We are now amongst the Union Tories of Tennessee and have been on our guns all the time. We have with us forty thousands rounds and are ready for a fight, though we will not have one here. The people treat us very kindly here. Secession flags wave over the whole town.
I spoke yesterday to four thousand people at Cleveland. I was called out and got on top the cars. Major Stockdale spoke.
I left seventeen sick men at Corinth and four nurses. I hated to do it but could not help it. I left them all crying. The boys that are with me are well and in good spirits. Tom and Henry are well. I left Wayne Gowin, he is very feeble. In haste, don't be uneasy, my dear. We leave here tomorrow for Richmond, Virginia. My love to all.
God bless you.
