Miss Sallie-
Owing to my absence upon the circuit I did not receive your very kind, generous favor of the 2nd inst. til last evening with which, and others I spent a few hours of pleasant mentation in perusing, and meditating upon their contents and meaning; and upon this point Miss Sallie I would plainly and frankly allude to a portion of your as there are conflicting clauses in it that may possibly have led me into error. You say, “I know you cannot possibly think strange of my declining a correspondence with you, for it has always been a fixed principle with me since I have been old enough to think on the subject not to correspond with gentlemen, although I cannot say that there would be any indiscretion in so doing.” That is quite plain and needs no comment – Here is the next clause
