Raleigh Miss
July 27 1860
Dear Miss Sallie:
I rec’d your happy missive of the 19th inst. on the eve of my depature to the masonic convention called by the D.D. Grand Lecturer at Hillsboro from which place I have just returned after a week’s tedious and tiring work, and avail myself of this the very first opportunity of answering your Letter – and must now apologize in advance, for my brevity in writing this, as I have done nothing else today but answer letters, having gotten behind in consequence of my absence.
I have nothing of material interest to write. It looks like starvation in this and other eastern counties. We have had no rain yet of consequence being about 12 or 14 weeks drought.
