You will doubtless be greatly surprised at receiving a communication from me especially so when I write it with the full recollection of the remark made by you in conversation when last I saw you –to wit- “I never write to gentlemen”
I admit that in writing to you I am culpable, or in other words, that this is not only in direct violation of an adopted rule of yours – “Not to correspond with gentlemen” but also a direct violation of established rules of epistolary etiquette – id est – to write to a Young Lady without her consent.
