Raleigh Miss
Oct. 5th 1860
Dear Miss Sallie
I wrote you last a short hastily scrawl from Paulding, written about eleven o’clock at night, a time when my spirit and feelings were want to embrace the calm repose afforded by “old Morpheus” and hence it was a short, badly executed and meaningless letter, therefore since my return home I have concluded to write you again, which I presume will be as is my last letter to “Miss Sallie Johnson.”
Pardon me for saying that the next letter I may be under the necessity of writing to you
