Mr. Hardy
Your missive of last week was received some days since, and notwithstanding my declaration not to write to gentlemen, I have concluded to break through an established rule for once and reply to you briefly. I know you cannot possible think strange of my declining a correspondence with you, for it has always been a fixed principle with me since I have been old enough to think on the subject not to correspond with gentlemen, although I cannot say that there would be any indiscretion in so doing. I am always delighted to hear from any gentlemen friends, and will be happy to hear from you at any time.
Your friend truly,
Sallie Johnson
