Biography
William James Raspberry is well- known as a syndicated columnist for the Washington Post. He was interviewed about his experiences growing up in Okolona, Mississippi, and for his perceptions of pre- civil- rights- era race relations in and out of Mississippi.
Raspberry was born on October 12, 1935, to James Lee and Willie Mae ( Tucker) Raspberry. He received his education through high school in his hometown of Okolona and graduated from Indian Central College in 1958 with a B. S. in history.
In 1956 he began his career in journalism as reporter- editor for the Indianapolis Recorder and, after a two- year tour of duty in the United States Army, 1960- 62, took a similar position with the Washington Post. Since 1966 he has worked as the Post's urban affairs columnist, has contributed articles to a variety of popular magazines on such topics as race relations and public education, and has appeared as a television commentator and panelist. He has also lectured at various times on race relations and public education, and has served as an instructor of journalism at Howard University, 1971- 73.
Raspberry married Sondra Patricia Dodron in 1966. The Raspberrys reside in Washington, D. C., and have three children.
