Biography
Mr. Charlie Parker was born in the early 1890s at Enterprise, Mississippi. After his family moved to Laurel around the turn of the century, Mr. Parker began working for the Eastman Gardner sawmill at the age of eleven. He stayed with the mill for nearly thirty years. He began work as a water carrier and worked his way up to the position of block setter. In 1937, Mr. Parker borrowed money to open a taxicab company in Laurel which operated in the city until 1964.

This is an interview for the Mississippi Oral History Program of The University of Southern Mississippi. The interview is with Mr. Charlie Parker of Laurel, Mississippi. It is being recorded in Mr. Parker's home in Laurel, July 22, 1981. The interviewer is Dr. Orley B. Caudill.
Dr. Caudill: Mr. Parker, thank you very much for taking time to record the oral history with us today. And would you just tell me how old you are.
