Transcript
This is an interview for the Mississippi Oral History Program of The University of Southern Mississippi. The interview is with Dr. Dollye Robinson and is taking place on September 5, 1997. The interviewer is Tom Ward.
Ward: It is September 5, 1997. We're in the office of Dr. Dollye Robinson at Jackson State University. Good afternoon, Dr. Robinson.
Robinson: Good afternoon.
Ward: I'd like to begin by asking you to give me a background of yourself: where you're from, your education, your career, and so forth.
Robinson: All right. I am a native of Jackson, Mississippi, a graduate of the public schools in Jackson, Mississippi. A bachelor's degree from Jackson State University, a bachelor of music- there was a bachelor of science degree- a bachelor of music degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Two master's degrees from Northwestern. One that's in music, trumpet, and the other is in music education. A Ph. D. degree from Northwestern University. I've studied at Boston University, the Boston College of Music, and several other places. That gives you a background of education. I came to Jackson State as a- well, I guess pretty young. I won't go into that age thing, but I came to Jackson State in 1952. I've been here longer than any other person at Jackson State, but I came as an assistant band director.
Ward: OK.
Robinson: And once I had done some band directing and thought I needed to go back to school, I was appointed in absentia a chair of the department of music, and I stayed in that position for twenty years. When certain things started happening that they needed my- they said they needed my expertise in doing some research and some reporting to the IHL board on all of the units that were in the school of liberal arts and at that time was called liberal studies. And the then president asked me to move up to the dean's office as an acting assistant dean to get that over. But it turned out that that acting sort of dropped off. mus- coh. robinsondo. doc Page 1 of 12
