An Oral History with Miss Gladys Austin

Biography
Miss Gladys Austin was born April 1, 1927, in Laurel, Mississippi. Her parents were A. M. Austin and Mattie Jones Austin. She was the youngest of three girls. She was reared and educated by her mother and her stepfather, Dennis Red Scott. She has never married, has no children, and still lives at home. She was graduated from Oak Park High School in Laurel in 1945. She received a B. S. from Tennessee A and I State University in 1950, an M. S. from Northern Arizona University in 1961, and accomplished post- graduate work at eight other universities. Her life's work was forty years as a science teacher. She retired June 11, 1990 on an AAA Teaching Certificate. She is a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, has served in many positions, and was treasurer over a span of twenty- five years. She is a member of the NAACP, holds life membership in education organizations, numerous community organizations, is active on boards, commissions, committees, and is an avid volunteer. Among her many awards, the two most cherished are first as an Inductee into the Jones County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Hall of Fame, All Civic Night June 11, 1992. She was the second African- American person and only African- American female to receive this award. And the second of her two most cherished awards is recognition in Who's Who Among America's Teachers, First Edition 1990. Her special interests are reading, keeping abreast with news, playing games, helping people, gardening, and serving where needed.
