Biography
Mr. P. A. Tims was born on October 20, 1890, in Ethel, Mississippi, to David Webster Tims and Martha Lowery Tims. When he was two years old his family moved to the Adams Springs Community in Attala County and later to McCool, Mississippi. One of thirteen children, Mr. Tims worked on his family's farm until he was grown. He attended public schools in rural Attala County and in McCool, and in 1912 he enrolled in the first class to convene on the campus of the newly established Mississippi Normal College ( now the University of Southern Mississippi) in Hattiesburg.
Mr. Tims learned to set type as a youth and worked for several newspapers in Mississippi, Virginia, and Texas before returning to Poplarville, Mississippi, to manage the Free Press. He later established a paper of his own, the Weekly Democrat, which he operated until 1940. After selling his paper he opened a mercantile in Poplarville which he owned and operated until 1961. Mr. Tims also owned a farm on which he grew tung oil trees and raised beef cattle. He was elected to the Poplarville City Council and served a total of 16 years as an alderman.
Mr. Tims was married to the former Eula Lea Tatum of Waynesboro, Mississippi, and their children are: P. A. Tims Jr., Mary Katherine Tims, and Margaret Tims Younathan. He died on July 26, 1982.

| Description | Oral history.; Interview conducted on July 7, 1976 with Mr. P.A. Tims of Poplarville, Mississippi. Tims was born on October 20, 1890 in Ethel, Mississippi. In 1912, he enrolled in the first class to convene on the campus of the newly established Mississippi Normal College (now the University of Southern Mississippi) in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Tims managed the newspaper, the Free Press in Poplarville, Mississippi until he set up his own paper, the Weekly Democrat.
