Biography
Dr. Antone Walter Tannehill, Jr., was born May 22, 1929, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His parents were Antone Walter and Marjorie Wyman Tannehill. He grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and he was graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1947. From 1947 to 1950, he attended Vanderbilt University; from 1950 to 1954, he attended Duke University Medical School, from which he was graduated in 1954. He served an internship at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia, and then served in the United States Air Force as a medical officer. Moving to Nettleton, Mississippi in 1957, he opened a private practice of general medicine. From 1964 to 1967, he served a residency in internal medicine at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in Louisiana. In 1967 he moved to Tupelo, Mississippi, where he practiced internal medicine until his retirement in 1997.
From 1967 to 1976, Dr. Tannehill practiced internal medicine in partnership with Dr. F. L. Lummus in Tupelo, Mississippi. In 1976, he formed Internal Medicine Associates with Drs. Bailey, Lummus, Murphey, and Wood. Dr. Tannehill is a member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church, Tupelo. Currently he serves as medical director of Good Samaritan Health Services Incorporated - Free Clinic. He has been involved in many medical mission trips to Central America, Romania, and Cameroon, Africa.
In 1995 he received the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians, Mississippi / Louisiana chapter. In 1994 he received the Tupelo, Mississippi, Junior Auxiliary Outstanding Citizen Award. In 1993 he received the Community Service Award form the Mississippi State Medical Association. In 1987 he received an award from Itawamba Community College for being medical director of the Respiratory Therapy Program from its beginning in 1975 until 1987. In 1977 he received the Physician of the Year, Golden Tongue Blade Award from North Mississippi Medical Center, the first year the award was given.
Dr. Tannehill is married to the former Diane Evans, and they have three sons, Antone, III, David, and Jeffrey, and three grandchildren.
