Mrs. Katie Arnold Smith was born on October 16, 1905, in Ellisville, Mississippi. She attended public schools in Jones County, graduating from the Jones County Agricultural High School. She taught music for six years, four years at Judson College and two years at Mississippi State Teachers College ( now the University of Southern Mississippi).
On June 11, 1933, Smith married Dr. Prentiss Edward Smith, a general surgeon. The couple had two children, a son, who is a cardiovascular surgeon, and a daughter, who is an anesthesiologist. Both practice in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Smith has been involved in many community activities and belonged to numerous clubs.
