Biography
Mr. Edwin Hammond Smith was born on December 17, 1894, in Bladen Springs, Alabama, to Mr. Turner Rogers Smith and Mamie Grove Smith. His family moved to Mississippi and eventually settled in Hattiesburg. Mr. Smith attended Hattiesburg Public Schools through the eighth grade. As was common at that time, he could not complete high school locally. He finished high school at Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College, now Alcorn State University, in Lorman, Mississippi, and then continued on at Alcorn for four years of college. From there he went to Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, graduating in 1924 as a licensed pharmacist.
Mr. Smith returned to Hattiesburg and opened a pharmacy in 1925. He operated his business for 55 years before retiring in 1980. During his years in business, Mr. Smith witnessed many changes in the growth and the development of the city of Hattiesburg. He was an active participant in the voter registration drives of the 1960s and was one of the first registered black voters in the city.
Mr. Smith married Lucille Trotter of Meridian in 1928. He was an active member of the St. Paul Methodist Church of Hattiesburg throughout his life. He died on October 19, 1985.
