Biography
Joseph Schwartz was born on January 3, 1938, in New York City, the first son of Leon Schwartz and Beatrice Krevens Schwartz. His brother Michael was born in 1942. Both parents were political activists. His father was a union organizer and was elected Business Agent for the International Fur and Leather Workers Union. In 1946 the family moved to Los Angeles. After being graduated from John Marshall High School in 1955, Schwartz went to the University of California in Berkeley where he got a B. A. in physics and sociology in 1959 and a Ph. D. in elementary particle physics in 1964. He was active in Friends of SNCC in Berkeley and went South in the autumn of 1964. He worked in Hattiesburg from September 1964 to March 1965. After teaching at Richmond College in the City University of New York, he moved to London, England in 1975 with his partner Susie Orbach. They have two children, Lukas, born in 1984, and Lianna, born in 1989. Joseph Schwartz is now a writer and psychotherapist.
