Biography
Miss Iva E. Sandifer was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on July 23, 1918. She graduated from Tuskegee Institute in 1940 with a degree in English. She later went on to do graduate work at Fisk University and New York University, receiving her master's degree from NYU in 1964. Miss Sandifer returned to Mississippi, where she taught in the Hattiesburg public school system for thirty- one years, retiring from Hattiesburg High School. Miss Sandifer was a member of numerous civic organizations. She served as secretary for her local NAACP chapter and as president of the Mississippi State Federation for Colored Women's Clubs. She was a member of the Laurel- Hattiesburg chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, the Negro Business and Professional Women's Club, and the Green Thumb Original Home and Garden Club. She was a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church for sixty- six years. Miss Sandifer is now deceased.
