Biography
Mr. Will Davis Campbell has deep roots in the state of Mississippi. His forbearers moved to the state in the 19th century, some settling in Amite County while it still was a territory. Will Campbell was born on a farm of about 80 acres and " Life was generally hard work, which nobody complained about because that was what life was." He attended school in Amite County, graduating from East Fork High School at the age of sixteen. Mr. Campbell is a preacher, and was ordained into the Baptist Church very early, " I guess I was maybe just turned seventeen." His life always has been directed toward the ministry, he recalls that " except when I'd get a whipping or something, and be mad or rebellious, I was always going to be a preacher." mus- coh. campbellw. doc Page 1 of 71

| Description | Oral history.; Interview conducted on June 8, 1976, with Will D. Campbell. Mr. Campbell, born in Amite County, Mississippi, was ordained as a pastor at the age of 17. He first became aware of race relations during time spent in the military, when he read a novel by Howard Fast entitled "Freedom Road". His participation in race relations is given a theological approach, with emphasis on alleviating crises and preventing violence. |
