Biography
Clarence Benton ( Buddie) Newman was born on May 8, 1921, in Valley Park, Mississippi. Mr. Newman's father served in the Mississippi House of Representatives and gave his son the opportunity to work as a House page. As a page, Mr. Newman was exposed to the legislative process at a young age.
In 1942, Mr. Newman left his job with the Southern Natural Gas Company to serve in the army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. After the war Mr. Newman returned to his job and began farming in Issaquena County, Mississippi.
In 1948, Mr. Newman began his long career of service to the state of Mississippi by being elected to the state Senate. After one term in the Senate, he ran and was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives. For the next thirty- six years, Mr. Newman remained in the House. During his tenure he was chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, chairman of the Southern Council of State Governments, and Speaker Pro Tempore of the House. He also served for twelve years as Speaker of the House.
Mr. Newman retired from politics in 1988 and now resides in Valley Park with his wife, Betty.
