This is an interview for the Mississippi Oral History Program of The University of Southern Mississippi. The interview is with Dennis Mitchell and is taking place on July 31, 1997. The interviewer is Tom Ward.
Ward: It's July 31, 1997. We're in the home of Mr. Dennis Mitchell in Jackson, Mississippi. Good afternoon, Mr. Mitchell.
Mitchell: Good afternoon.
Ward: I'd like to begin just by asking you to give a background of yourself: where you're from, your education, your career, and so forth.
Mitchell: Well, originally I'm from Florence, Alabama, and I graduated from what was then called the University of North Alabama. It's now the University of- no, it was called Florence State Alabama then, and now it's the University of North Alabama- with a double major in English and history. And then I came to Ole Miss on an NDEA fellowship and got an M. A. and Ph. D. in history. My major field was English history. And following that I taught one year at Northwest Mississippi Junior College and then was hired as assistant director of the Humanities Council. ( telephone rings)

Ward: All right.
Mitchell: OK, where was I?
