Biography
Thomas Y. Minniece was born in Meridian, Mississippi on October 9, 1912. After graduating from the Meridian public schools, he received a BA degree from the University of Texas in 1933 and a law degree from the University of Mississippi in 1936.
Mr. Minniece was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1939, but he resigned in December 1941 to serve in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following his release from active military duty at the close of the war, Mr. Minniece served for twenty- seven years in the Mississippi National Guard, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.
Mr. Minniece resumed his political career in 1948, when he became Chancellor for the 12th District, serving until 1953. He also served as a member of the Lauderdale County Election Commission from 1956 to 1964, and he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1952. Mr. Minniece ran unsuccessfully for state Attorney General in 1976, although he did receive approximately thirty- three percent of the state vote after a campaign of only six weeks.
Since 1936, Mr. Minniece has practiced law in Meridian, except during the years of World War II and during his tenure as Chancellor. In addition, Mr. Minniece taught political science and history at Meridian Junior College from 1968 to 1978.
